About the Artist: Jessica Somers is of Abenaki descent from Sudbury, Ontario. Jessica has been practicing her Art for 15 years and considers her work to be both traditional and contemporary. Her inspiration to become an Artist originates from her grandmother. Today, the intricate design and style she uses is inspired by her daughter.Jessica believes that art is like a language; it is a medium to express ideas and to share information. Art helps share thoughts, ideas and visions that may not be able to be articulated any other way. Jessica enjoys painting on wood, feathers, baskets, poplar, and birch bark. Jessica has been creating more intricate, non-conventional canvas pieces that engage viewers to develop creative thinking, visual literacy and engage discussion of Indigenous issues that her people are facing today.
